Terra Hall Recycling Project
Aiming to tackle the problem of waste disposal at UArts: confusion.
Three ambitious students focused on their floor of Terra Hall, dissecting behavior, attitudes, policy and practice. By understanding what past efforts had been made as well as how the current academic body treats their waste, we hope to educate and create better options for the floor in the near-term and for the school in coming semesters. We constructed an organizational structure prototype that utilizes the waste collection bins already available, thereby saving the school thousands of dollars in new bin costs. Our example uses text, color and shape to differentiate the difference between trash and recycling. We have secured the support of our University and have submitted proposals to implement our 2-bin system campus-wide. Success depends on coordination between students, faculty, housekeeping and contracted waste collection practices to ensure our sorted waste is transported to the proper facilities. Over the Spring, 2010 semester, we've met with the Green Group on campus and continue to track the initiative's progress.
